Arthur's Pass

Hokitika

At Hokitika, we went to the Kiwi House, where we saw native eels (one of them was called Grandma and was over 100 years old) and caught a crawly/koura (a Paranephrops freshwater crayfish) with a baited line. The kiwis were very active in their nocturnal house.

Punakaiki and Mitchell's Gully

The Pancake Rocks at Punakaiki are shaped like stacks of pancakes (no-one knows why!) and have various toppings of different plants on them. There were lots of blowholes there and we were lucky to visit at high tide to see the waves crashing. We had pancakes for breakfast at the campsite and Evie and Isla played all evening with their Wellington friend that they had met at the previous campsite.

Mitchell's Gully was an old gold mine rainforest walk which was deserted as we visited on a Sunday. We initially went the wrong way through some dark mining passages but saw some glow worms on the ceilings and used our torch to explore!

Lake Rotoiti

We heard kiwis screeching at night time and bellbirds and tuis here at dawn.

Mapua

We loved Mapua, especially the ice creams and possibly the best fish and chips in the world from The Smokehouse.

In case you're wondering, hokey pokey, raspberry and vanilla

Tahunanui
Possibly the best playground in the world.
